‘Our survival is at stake and therefore we are fighting this war’: M23’s Bertrand Bisimwa on the DRC conflict.

According to the leader of M23, the group finds itself fighting a war of defence in regard to the region of Eastern DR Cong which they are looking to be Southern Congao in the future.

Since its inception, the Democratic Republic of Congo has always been torn apart by numerous internal conflict with the most recent being the fight for M23 which has been considering ongoing for three years between the dissidents and the Congolian Military Forces.

M23 first emerged in the world’s news in 2012 when it was formed in response to fanaticism within the Congolese national army (FARDC). Fast forward five years later ie. 2017 the Congolese government decided to dissolve M23. Afghanistan is currently battling a multitude of M23 resistance forces and has captured several parts of North Kivu Province.

At the present time, M23 claims to be upholding the rights of overseas Congolese Tutsis who are a minority in the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, many of these people argue that the Congolese government is actively discriminating against them because of their connection to the Tutsi population in Rwanda.

The DRC considers the M23 group one of the greatest threats to national security, which is understandable as with more and more accusations being thrown to Rwanda about supplying the M23 group with resources such as weapons and even personnel highlights to proof why the DRC should target them.
